Record bidding war at surf memorabilia auction, donation goal obliterated , Matt George goes under for the cause, BBQ dinner devoured, Gerlach defeats Slater, Six strings bent, music moved, spirits danced,
no nudity (at least that I saw).
Stoked! I am excited to go to this year’s function as I remember how fun last year was. I think because this is not just another bukit-surf-drunkfest-uber-party, but a benefit to an organization and place and people who work, live and enjoy Uluwatus’ waves and surrounds – Also it is an excuse to ride my motorbike along Jl. Goa Gong and other back of the way roads to Uluwatu and the Project Clean Uluwatu Fundraiser; and I will use any reason to go for a ride. Riding motorcycles in Bali is really enjoyable and even more so when you have a good reason (see: excuse).
Surf parties are fun and easy to get ready for: tee-shirt, shorts or trunks, flip-flop sandals. Done. Really ladies, I love seeing you all dolled-up but fer cheese sakes it’s a surf function….
Vanda, my girlfriend, is a good sport and lovely companion and willingly(!) rides with me on the winding semi- busy bukit roads to the party. The back of a surf-scrambler modified motorcycle is no easy place for an evening gown… Bali-style formal includes shorts, in case you have not been here before or not wandered out of Seminyak yet..
As we pass through the entry I notice there are some people of note from the world of surfing here, legends and underground dudes and pros and such. I am content to be not-famous, seeing a few folks I know from the water or around town- this anonymity allows me to slip amongst the crowed unnoticed and, to my advantage, I can experience this function as a pedestrian guy off the street and experience the event as a mortal. No matter because from the security parking attendants through the ticket sales and reception we were treated with courtesy and friendliness I like that, actually prefer it because aren’t we all, underneath the logo’s tee-shirts and tattoos and skin colors and areas of origin just folks who are enjoying a beautiful evening out celebrating a cause we like and who love to surf?
The auction was kicking off when we arrived and The private bidders were competitive and generous – this was really fun to watch (not having the means to compete in the bidding), I relaxed and enjoyed watching Matt George, possibly in his best-to-date form as an emcee, absolutely own the crowd and motivate bidders into nebulous (in my wallets’ terms) offers, up to the point where in a fit of ultimate commitment he launched himself into the pool -fully clothed- in order to up the bid amount. It worked.
I am stoked to hear Curtis Lowe and Matt George talking about the auction profits exceed their expectations There were some really cool boards, one private surf sessions with friends only at Ulluwatu and one private (with 4 of your mates) surf sesh at Padang Padang … during the break between the semis and the final… accompanied by Mark Occhilupo and Tom Curren… A generous donation from the Uluwatu Balawista (lifeguards) and Rip Curl.
The location, Uluwatu Surf Villas is a stunning, amazing, cliff top view directly over the temples peak and the buildings border on luxurious really- and an open grassy knoll that accommodates a lot of folks. It was a beautiful night, with a sickle moon casting a lighted path across the sea from Java and a brilliant and rare clear view of our milky way stars swathed directly overhead beautiful, romantic. and that was a surprise bonus considering the almost constant rain we have had here for a month. Standing near the cliff edge away from the auction and crowd we enjoyed some quiet moments and soaked it all in.
We missed the BBQ and the film showing because, well, I arrived when I felt like arriving and heck this is Bali… I can say that the food, whatever it was absolutely demolished by the time we arrived, and even the lovely greeting staff, in true Balinese graciousness apologized for the food being finished already… Post event warung makan bunkos, no worries!
We did get to see a set from Andy Six Strings Band and they are good- I have seen Andy play for near three years now and honestly he get better every damn time I see him play. Particularly one song, I don’t know the title, he nails a funk riff while the bassist takes lead vocal duty and then blisters a lead- sick! I like music and I will have a dance when good music is playing (to the amusement of my girlfriend, like in the Nirmala Ungasan) and I am picky about music- these guys rock.
Mingling and chatting with any or all was easy and unpretentious and really enjoyable, it made for a great other than normal weekend night out. Well done by all!
Above: When I think of the size of the waves that this board is meant for, I see myself NOT in the lineup but rather watching from the railing at Uluwatu. I am not scared of drowning in huge surf. I am scared of the heart attack I will have when a gi-normous set wave heads right at me. I would never make it to drowning.
Other boards I saw included in the auction: Channel Islands Kelly Slater Model, a Christian Fletcher model by shaper Timmy Patterson, …Lost quad rounded nose short board, a super pin-tail-groovy-paisley-art shape by Luke Studer, and a personal board from Brad Gerlach’s quiver that took the highest bid at $2,000 USD or something – beating the bid for Slater’s board… Demographics? Or was it Brad’s cathartic intro…
By the way, these-
